John Deere 3020, 3010 and 4010: Specs, Problems and Value
Nebraska tests put the John Deere 3020 at 64 to 71 PTO hp, between the 3010 and the 4010. Here is which one fits a small farm, how to read the serial plate from Deere's own catalogs, what to inspect and what each sells for.

IN THIS GUIDE JUMP TO A SECTION +
For most small farms, the John Deere 3020 is the right pick of the three. It makes 64 to 71 PTO hp on the Nebraska tests. It has a Category II hitch, and Deere still publishes its parts catalogs.
The 3010 is the cheaper, lighter choice for light work. The 4010 is a much bigger tractor than its looks suggest.
All three are New Generation row crop tractors from Deere’s Waterloo works. They look alike, but the numbers do not.
Nebraska measured the 3010 diesel at 59.44 PTO hp. The 3020 diesel made 65.28 to 71.26, and the 4010 diesel made 84.00.
That 4010 figure comes from Test 761, which our John Deere 4020 guide already covers. This article reads the 3010 and 3020 reports the same way, from the University of Nebraska test files. It adds Deere’s own parts catalog introductions.
It covers what to inspect, what they sell for and how to make one safe.
The short version
- Nebraska tested the 3020 diesel at 65.28 PTO hp in 1963 and 71.26 in 1966. The 3010 diesel made 59.44 and the 4010 diesel made 84.00.
- Deere’s parts catalogs date 3020 production to 1964 through 1972 and split the model at serial 123,000.
- A 3020 weighs 7,695 to 8,350 pounds bare, so it is a 4 ton tractor, not a compact.
- Our math on 8 auction sales, April 2025 to September 2026: median $4,560, range $2,200 to $8,580.
- Diesels were tested with a 24 volt system. Gas and LP tractors used 12 volts.
- Plan to add a rollover structure, and check the National ROPS Rebate Program first.
What the John Deere 3010, 3020 and 4010 are
They are three sizes of one family. The 3010 and 3020 are 4 cylinder tractors, and the 4010 is a bigger 6 cylinder.
Nebraska tested the 3010 and 4010 in September 1960. It tested the first 3020s in the fall of 1963, within days of the 4020.
Deere’s parts catalog introductions date the 3020 to “manufactured 1964 to 1969” and “1969 to 1972”. So the tractors Nebraska saw in 1963 were first run machines. The model year count starts in 1964.
TractorData dates the 3010 to 1961 through 1963, with about 44,000 built. It lists 74,463 row crop 3020s among its totals. Standard, row crop utility, high crop and orchard versions add a few thousand more.
Treat those counts as reference numbers. We found no Deere total.
Engines and fuel
The diesel 3020 is a 4 cylinder of 270 cubic inches. It has a 4.25 inch bore and a 4.75 inch stroke, rated at 2,500 rpm.
The gasoline and LP engines tested in 1963 and 1966 were 227 cubic inches. By the 1969 tests the gasoline engine was a 241. Deere’s late parts catalog uses 241 as the displacement code in its engine serial example.
The 3010 diesel is 254 cubic inches and runs at 2,200 rpm. Its gasoline engine is 201 cubic inches. The 4010 is a 380 cubic inch diesel.
Diesel was the common fuel, but all three came in gas. The 3010 and 3020 also came in LP gas.
Nebraska burned 5.1 gallons of diesel per hour at full PTO load on the 1963 3020. The 1969 gasoline Power Shift tractor burned 6.9 gallons per hour on the same test.
Syncro-Range or Power Shift
The 3010 has a partial range synchromesh gearbox with 8 forward speeds and a single plate dry clutch. The 3020 came both ways. You could order Syncro-Range, or a full range Power Shift with two wet clutch packs.
The Syncro-Range 3020 has 8 forward and 2 reverse speeds, and you work a clutch pedal. The Power Shift has 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds on one lever, and you shift under load. The reports for the 1963 tests and the 1969 gasoline test describe the Power Shift in those words.
Power Shift arrived on the 4020 at the same time, which our 4020 guide covers. To shift on the go without a clutch, the 3020 is the cheapest Deere that does it.
John Deere 3010 vs 3020: what changed
The 3020 is a 3010 with more power, a stronger PTO and a Power Shift option. Later tractors added console controls. Nebraska measured about 6 to 12 more PTO hp, depending on the year and fuel.
The table below puts the three models side by side using the Nebraska reports we read.
| Model | Nebraska test | Diesel engine | PTO hp at rated speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3010 | 762, Sep 1960 | 254 cu in, 2,200 rpm | 59.44 | Synchromesh gearbox only. Deere rated it at 55 PTO hp. Weight 6,542 lb bare. |
| 3020 | 848, Sep 1963 (Power Shift); 940, May 1966 (Syncro-Range) | 270 cu in, 2,500 rpm | 65.28 and 71.26 | Syncro-Range or Power Shift. Weight 7,945 to 8,080 lb bare. |
| 4010 | 761, Sep 1960 | 380 cu in, 6 cylinders | 84.00 | Max pull 7,002 lb. 24 volt. Deere rated it at 80 PTO hp. |
The weight jump is the part buyers miss. The 3020 diesel weighed 7,945 pounds bare in 1963, against 6,542 for the 3010 diesel. That is about 1,400 pounds more tractor, in a body that looks nearly the same.
The PTO and hydraulics
Owners describe the 3010 PTO hub as its weak point under heavy PTO work. They say the 3020 went to a stronger slide in design with a locking ring. That comes from owner reports, not a Deere document we could read, so inspect the PTO on any tractor.
Both tractors use a closed center hydraulic system driven directly by the engine. TractorData lists the 3020 at 2,100 psi and 14 gallons per minute total. Its figures for the 3010 vary from page to page, so we do not quote them.
Deere’s filter overview gives the 3020 hydraulic capacity as 8 gallons with Syncro-Range and 11 gallons with Power Shift. The early parts catalog lists different pump models for the two transmissions, 3MP1 and 5MP1. Deere dropped pump model numbers at tractor serial 84,072.
Changes by year, with sources
The 3020 changed in steps, and the serial number tells you which tractor you have. The table lists what we could tie to a document.
| Model year or serial | What changed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 1963 | Nebraska tests the first diesel, gasoline and LP tractors, all Power Shift. Deere dates production from 1964. | Nebraska Tests 848, 851, 852; Deere parts catalog |
| Serial 68,000 (1965) | Serial number format changes to one that spells out chassis, fuel and transmission. | Deere parts catalog PC858 |
| By May 1966 | Dry type air cleaner fitted. Syncro-Range tractors tested at about 6 hp more than the 1963 Power Shifts. | Nebraska Tests 940, 941, 942 |
| Serial 84,072 (1966) | Hydraulic pump identified by tractor serial instead of a pump model number. | Deere parts catalog PC858 |
| 1966 | Roll-Gard rollover structure launched across the line. | Deere heritage newsletter, via our 4020 guide |
| Serial 123,000 (1969) | New parts catalog, PC1115, and a new technical manual. 241 cubic inch gasoline engine in the 1969 tests. Owners add that console controls arrived here. | Deere parts catalogs; Nebraska Tests 1010, 1011; owner reports for the console |
| Serial 130,000 | Air cleaner without a precleaner takes a different element. | Deere filter overview |
| 1972 | Last model year in Deere’s catalog. | Deere parts catalog PC1115 |
The 1969 test tractors were standard tread machines on a 92.75 inch wheelbase. The Power Shift gas tractor made 67.13 PTO hp, and the Syncro-Range made 71.37.
We could not confirm the console date in a Deere document. The 4020 catalog split at 201,000 lines up with its console tractors. The 3020 split at 123,000 falls in the same model year, so the owner reports are plausible.
Check the dash before you believe a listing.
John Deere 3020 specs from the Nebraska tests
The John Deere 3020 made 64.14 to 71.37 PTO hp at its rated 2,500 rpm in the Nebraska reports. Drawbar power ran 54.50 to 61.47 hp. Use these numbers, not claims on a listing or a forum.
| Nebraska test | Dates | Fuel and transmission | PTO hp at 2,500 rpm | PTO hp at 1,000 rpm PTO speed | Drawbar hp | Max pull (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 848 | Sep to Oct 1963 | Diesel, Power Shift | 65.28 | 59.25 | 54.77 | 7,536 |
| 851 | Sep to Oct 1963 | Gasoline, Power Shift | 64.14 | 59.33 | 54.60 | 7,621 |
| 852 | Oct 1963 | LP gas, Power Shift | 64.70 | 56.34 | 54.50 | 7,725 |
| 940 | May 1966 | Diesel, Syncro-Range | 71.26 | 64.32 | 61.47 | 7,596 |
| 941 | May to Jun 1966 | Gasoline, Syncro-Range | 70.59 | 64.74 | 61.38 | 7,558 |
| 1010 | May to Jun 1969 | Gasoline, Power Shift | 67.13 | 62.63 | 55.79 | 8,107 |
| 1011 | May to Jun 1969 | Gasoline, Syncro-Range | 71.37 | 66.11 | 61.26 | 7,804 |
We read these figures from the University of Nebraska’s archived reports, starting with Test 848. Drawbar hp is the maximum available power over the two hour run in 4th gear. Max pull was measured in 2nd gear with ballast.
The 1966 LP gas test, Test 942, made 70.66 PTO hp. Its drawbar figure was not legible in the scan we read, so it stays out of the table.
The Power Shift tractors read 4 to 7 hp lower at the PTO than the Syncro-Range tractors. The reports do not say why. Do not assume a Power Shift tractor is stronger because it costs more.
Weight, size and tires
The tested 3020s weighed 7,695 to 8,350 pounds bare with an operator. With ballast they weighed 9,495 to 10,320 pounds.
The diesel was 7,945 pounds in 1963 and 8,080 in 1966. Plan on 4 tons on the trailer.
Row crop tractors had a 90 inch wheelbase, and the 1969 standard tractors a 92.75 inch wheelbase. Rear tread adjusted from 57 or 60 inches out to 91 inches. The test tractors ran 15.5-38 rear tires and 6.00-16 front tires.
Other specs
| Spec | What we found |
|---|---|
| Hitch | Category II, per TractorData. We found no lift capacity in any Deere document we could read. |
| PTO | Independent, 1,000 rpm measured at 2,100 engine rpm in the reports. TractorData lists 540 and 1,000 rpm options. |
| Hydraulics | Closed center, engine driven. 8 gallons Syncro-Range, 11 gallons Power Shift, per Deere. TractorData: 2,100 psi, 14 gpm total. |
| Fuel tank | 29 gallons for diesel and gasoline, 33.6 gallons for LP gas, per Deere’s filter overview. |
| Crankcase and cooling | 2 gallons of engine oil with filter, 4 gallons of coolant, per Deere. |
| Electrical | Diesel tested with 24 volts, two 12 volt batteries. Gas and LP tested with 12 volts. |
| Brakes | Wet disc, hydraulically power actuated. |
| Transmission oil | John Deere Special 303 oil in the 1960s reports. Deere’s current overview names Hy-Gard. |
For what Category II means with used implements, see our 3 point hitch category guide. Differential lock was an option, and TractorData lists it as a mechanical lock.
John Deere 4010 and 3010 compared with the 3020
The 4010 is the strong one, the 3010 is the light one, and the 3020 sits in between. The 4010 makes 84.00 PTO hp, which is 13 hp more than the best 3020 diesel. It also needs a bigger trailer, a bigger barn door and a bigger fuel budget.
The 3010 has the lowest purchase price and the lowest weight. It also has the least power, the oldest design and no Power Shift option. If your work is a 6 foot cutter, a small baler and light tillage, the 3010 can do it.
The 3020 fits best when one tractor must do hay, a loader and a 3 point disc. It is also the easiest of the three to resell. Our tractor sizing guide shows how to match hp to the work.
Is a 3020 a good small farm tractor today?
A 3020 suits 20 to 80 acres of hay, pasture and tillage. It is a poor fit for a few acres of mowing.
It has the pull and PTO power for a 7 or 8 foot disc and a baler. It is heavy and tall for light work, and a modern compact does gentle chores better.
Against the 4020, it is a smaller, lighter and cheaper tractor with about 25 fewer PTO hp. Owners of the bigger tractor report pulling 14 foot discs.
On PTO power the 3020 matches a modern 65 to 70 hp utility tractor. It carries far more weight and far less comfort.
Loader use
Add a loader only if you will use it hard. Expect to spend money on the steering and hydraulics.
The 3020 was not designed around a loader, and its hydraulic pump is not large. Owners report slow lift and steering trouble on 3020s and 4020s after a loader was added. Read our front end loader guide before you commit.
3 point implements and PTO work
The Category II hitch fits a 3020 to Category II implements. Cheap used implements are mostly Category I, so check the pin size and top link before you buy. A rotary cutter of 6 to 8 feet suits the PTO power well.
Count the limits as well as the strengths:
- Fuel: about 5.1 gallons of diesel per hour at full PTO load, from Nebraska. Field work burns less.
- Weight: 4 tons bare, more with ballast and a loader.
- Safety: most tractors left the factory with no rollover structure.
- Age: the newest 3020 is more than 50 years old.
What to inspect before buying a 3020
Start with the transmission, hydraulics, electrics and rollover protection, because those are the expensive items. Bring a battery tester and a flashlight, and ask for a cold start.
- Read the serial plate at the rear of the transmission case and decode it with the section below.
- Start it cold. Watch for hard cranking, smoke and slow oil pressure.
- Run every gear. On a Power Shift, drive under load and watch for slipping as the oil warms.
- Test the clutch pedal on a Syncro-Range. Check for slipping, and listen for noise when you shift.
- Lift a heavy load on the 3 point hitch and see whether it drifts down.
- Run the hydraulics and steering hot. Time the lift and watch for leaks.
- Engage the PTO and listen for a whine.
- Look for a rollover structure, a seat belt and PTO shields.
Power Shift problems
The 3020 Power Shift shares its basic design with the 4020, so the same patterns show up. Owners of the bigger tractor report pressure loss as the oil warms, sticking valves and tired clutch packs. We found few reports specific to the 3020.
Measure pressure before you split a tractor. A sticking valve costs far less than a clutch pack job. Buy the technical manual before you buy the tractor.
24 volt systems on the diesels
The diesels Nebraska tested in 1963 and 1966 ran 24 volts from two 12 volt batteries. The gas and LP tractors used 12 volts.
Nebraska did not test a 3020 diesel after 1966. We found no Deere document that says when, or whether, the 3020 diesel went to 12 volts.
The 4020 made that change with its 1969 console tractors. Check the batteries and the starter on any late 3020 before you assume.
Owners say most 24 volt trouble is weak batteries, bad cables or corroded grounds. A weak battery drags down the other one, so load test both.
Many owners convert to 12 volts. Reports are mixed on how easy it is, and a conversion does not cure a bad ground. For a tractor that will not start, our diesel starting diagnosis walks through fuel, air and compression.
Hydraulics, rockshaft and clutch
Slow or weak lift is the most common hydraulic complaint. Owners trace it to the oil, the filter, the suction screen or the pressure control valve. Start cheap, then measure flow and pressure before replacing parts.
A rockshaft that drifts down is leaking. A clutch that slips or a reverse that grinds on a Syncro-Range points to wear. Hour meters fail or get swapped, so judge use by pedal wear and play in the controls.
John Deere 3020 value: what they sell for
Our calculation from 8 auction sales between April 2025 and September 2026 puts the median at $4,560. The lowest sale was $2,200 and the highest $8,580. The middle four sold for $3,520 to $5,170.
We pulled the sales from the Construction Equipment Guide auction results page on October 15, 2026. It lists dates, model years and prices only, with no hours, condition or transmission type. Eight sales is a small sample, so treat it as a guide.
The spread inside one year shows how much condition matters. Two 1964 tractors sold in the same month of April 2025, one for $2,200 and one for $8,580. The page cannot tell us why.
| Model | Sales used | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3010 | 8 sales, Jan 2025 to Jan 2026 | $4,490 | $1,815 to $6,750 |
| 3020 | 8 sales, Apr 2025 to Sep 2026 | $4,560 | $2,200 to $8,580 |
| 4020 (from our 4020 guide) | 47 sales, Aug 2024 to Oct 2026 | $6,250 | $798 to $18,150 |
A 3010 and a 3020 sell for nearly the same money in this data. That makes the 3020 the better buy, because it gives more power for the same price.
The 4020 costs about $1,700 more at the median. Those are our calculations from different sample sizes, so do not read them as exact. Dealer and private asking prices usually sit above auction results.
Parts for the 3010, 3020 and 4010
Parts are easy to find for all three, through dealers, aftermarket suppliers and salvage yards. Deere’s parts site still lists two 3020 catalogs, and a dealer can check any item against your serial number.
PC858 covers 3020 serials up to 122,999, and PC1115 covers 123,000 and up. Deere’s technical manual for the late tractors, TM1005, uses the same 123,000 split. For the 3010, Deere lists PC690 for serials up to 49,999 and a second catalog, PC736.
A live catalog does not mean a part is in stock. The catalog marks dead items NLA, for no longer available. Ask the dealer to check your serial number part by part.
Aftermarket suppliers sell overhaul kits for the 4 cylinder engines, plus hydraulic, electrical and sheet metal parts. Our vintage tractor parts guide covers where to look and how to buy used parts safely.
Filters, fluids and intervals from Deere
Deere’s filter overview for the 3020, 4000 and 4020 is dated March 2019. It lists part numbers and intervals.
Use it as a checklist when you price a tractor that needs a service.
| Item | 3020 part number | Deere’s interval |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil filter | AR26350, with B3586R sealing washer | Every 200 hours and at every oil change |
| Transmission and hydraulic oil filter | AR75603, one on Syncro-Range, two on Power Shift | Every 600 hours |
| Hydraulic valve filter element | R27173 | Clean every 1,200 hours, dealer service |
| Diesel fuel filters | AR45098 (two) to serial 122,999; AR44077 or AR50041 after, by engine serial | Replace as required |
| Primary air cleaner | AR39798 diesel, AH19848 gas and LP; AR46481 without precleaner from serial 130,000 | Check every 10 hours, clean every 200 |
The same sheet names Hy-Gard for the hydraulic system and Torq-Gard for the engine. The 1960s Nebraska reports list John Deere Special 303 oil, which is the older spec. See our hydraulic fluid guide before you refill a system, and confirm the grade with a dealer.
Serial number lookup and model year
The basic tractor serial plate sits in the upper right corner at the rear of the transmission case, per both Deere parts catalogs. The engine has its own plate on the right side of the block.
On early tractors the engine plate is below the generator. On late ones it is behind the oil cooler. Match the two plates to each other and to the seller’s story.
From serial 68,000 on, the number spells out what the tractor is. Take T111-R125705R, the Syncro-Range tractor Nebraska tested in 1969.
T means tractor and the first 1 means a 3020. The next digit is the chassis. A 1 is row crop, 2 standard, 3 high crop, 4 row crop utility and 8 orchard.
The fourth digit is fuel: 1 for gasoline, 2 for LP gas, 3 for diesel. The letter is the transmission: P for Power Shift, R or S for Syncro-Range. Then comes the serial number, and a final R for the Waterloo works.
So T111-R125705R is a 3020 row crop, gasoline, Syncro-Range, serial 125,705. Plates before 68,000 carry only the model, the chassis digit, a T and the serial.
Model year by serial number
TractorData lists the first serial number of each model year. Deere’s catalogs confirm the 68,000 format change and the 123,000 split. They place the pump change at 84,072, just after the 1966 start.
Treat the other years as a guide.
| Model year | First serial |
|---|---|
| 1964 | 50,000 |
| 1965 | 68,000 |
| 1966 | 84,000 |
| 1967 | 97,286 |
| 1968 | 112,933 |
| 1969 | 123,000 |
| 1970 | 129,897 |
| 1971 | 150,000 |
| 1972 | 154,197 |
The 1969 test tractors fit the table. The Power Shift gas tractor was T111P126364R and the Syncro-Range was T111-R125705R, both inside the 1969 range.
For the 3010, TractorData lists first serials of 1,000 in 1961, 19,801 in 1962 and 32,400 in 1963. The last serial is 46,952.
One owner post gives the 1962 start as 10,801, so check a doubtful tractor against the catalog. TractorData puts the 3010 plate at the rear of the transmission case as well.
Safety: ROPS retrofit and the National ROPS Rebate Program
A rollover structure is the most important upgrade for a 3020 without one. NIOSH states that a ROPS with a seat belt is 99 percent effective at preventing death and serious injury in an overturn.
Tractors of this age left the factory without one. A tall row crop tractor with a heavy load is easy to flip.
Deere’s parts documentation lists ROPS kits that fit the 3010 and 3020. A foldable row crop kit, RE58257, and a rigid frame, AR51416, are both marked NLA, for no longer available. A rigid Hi-Crop frame, AR44707, and a steel canopy, AR51452, are also listed.
The canopy needs a muffler extension. See Deere’s ROPS parts page for the listing. If Deere’s kits are gone, aftermarket makers sell certified kits, so ask for the certification paperwork before you pay.
The National ROPS Rebate Program covers part of the cost in participating states. It is run by the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety in Agriculture with NIOSH funding.
Its site lists a 70 percent rebate on the kit, shipping and installation. Caps vary by state.
Pre approval is required. The kit must meet a recognized ROPS standard and include a seat belt. Homemade frames are excluded.
See the rebate program page for current terms. Wear the seat belt whenever the structure is up.
Match the report, serial range and sale example
The university archive identifies Test 848 as a 3020 diesel report dated September 23, 1963. Do not apply it to a gasoline tractor or another transmission without checking that configuration. A test result also does not measure wear in the tractor for sale.
Use the correct parts catalog serial break for component identification. An inferred console date is not a substitute for a manufacturer production reference. If the exact year cannot be established, keep that uncertainty in the buying decision.
For value, keep completed sales separate from asking prices and match fuel, transmission, tires and attachments. Confirm parts stock with the supplier before purchase. The Test 848 archive record identifies the historical source.
Bottom line
The John Deere 3020 is the sensible small farm choice of this family. It gives 64 to 71 PTO hp, a Category II hitch and live parts catalogs, at a 3010 price. It is too heavy for light mowing, and it needs a rollover structure.
Choose the 3010 only if the price is very low and the work is light. Choose the 4010 only if you need 84 hp and have the trailer and the barn for it.
Frequently asked questions
How many horsepower does a 3020 have?
Nebraska measured 64.14 to 71.37 PTO hp at 2,500 rpm, depending on fuel, transmission and year. The 1963 diesel made 65.28 and the 1966 diesel made 71.26. Drawbar power ran 54.50 to 61.47 hp.
Is the 3020 a 24 volt tractor?
The 3020 diesels Nebraska tested in 1963 and 1966 had a 24 volt system with two 12 volt batteries. The gas and LP tractors had 12 volts.
We found no Deere document on a later change. Check the batteries and the starter on any tractor you consider.
Is Power Shift better than Syncro-Range on a 3020?
Power Shift shifts under load and has 4 reverse speeds. It costs more to repair if the clutch packs or valves fail. Syncro-Range is simpler and cheaper to fix, and it tested a few hp stronger.
What is a good price for a 3020?
Our read of 8 auction sales from April 2025 to September 2026 puts a typical sale near $4,560. Most sold between $3,520 and $5,170. Condition and rollover protection drive the price.
How much does a John Deere 3020 weigh?
The tested tractors weighed 7,695 to 8,350 pounds bare with an operator. With ballast they weighed 9,495 to 10,320 pounds. Check your trailer and truck before you buy one.
Can you still get parts for a 3020?
Yes, from Deere dealers, aftermarket suppliers and salvage yards. Deere still publishes both parts catalogs, but some items are marked no longer available, including the rollover kits. Give the supplier your serial number, and verify any safety part before you count on it.
Where is the serial number on a 3020?
Deere’s parts catalogs put the basic tractor plate in the upper right corner at the rear of the transmission case. The engine has a second plate on the right side of the block. Match both to the year table above and to the 123,000 catalog split.
