Kubota Tractors: Lineup, Reliability and Who Should Buy One
Kubota says it has led US tractor sales for 20 years, but the brand is not right for everyone. Here is every series, where they are built, the warranty, known weak spots, used buying and who should skip it.

IN THIS GUIDE JUMP TO A SECTION +
Kubota announced on August 11, 2026 that it has been the top selling tractor brand in the United States for 20 straight years. The claim rests on EDA/UCC equipment transaction data for 2005 through 2025. The company’s own site counts more than 1,100 US dealers, and that reach is the main reason Kubota tractors are the default answer for small acreage owners.
For most people on 2 to 50 acres, the default is a good one. Kubota builds solid machines, the dealer is rarely far away, and owners say the tractors resell well.
You pay for all three, and the brand is not the right answer for everyone. This guide is the brand overview. It covers every current series, where the tractors are built, the warranty, the weak spots and recalls, used buying, and who should look elsewhere.
The short version
- Kubota’s US tractor lineup runs from the 16.6 hp BX1880 to the 141.4 hp M6-141, plus the larger M7.
- The series are BX, B, Standard L, Grand L, LX, MX, M4, M60, M5, M6 and M7, plus tractor loader backhoes.
- Pick by job: BX for mowing and a few acres, B, Standard L and LX for loader work and bush hogging, MX and M for hay.
- Sub compact and many compact models are built in Georgia. Some larger models, including the MX5400DTC, are built in Japan.
- The residential warranty on BX, B, LX and L is 2 years basic and 6 years powertrain. Commercial use cuts powertrain to 3 years.
- A redesigned BX90 sub compact line arrives in early 2027, so a leftover BX80 may be a bargain.
- Skip Kubota if you want the most hp per dollar, or if your nearest Kubota dealer is a long drive.
Are Kubota tractors good?
Yes. Owners rate the brand highly for three repeated reasons: the engines, the dealer network and the resale value. That is a pattern from owner forums, not a lab test.
No public reliability survey ranks small tractor brands. Treat every reputation claim here as owner reports plus what Kubota publishes.
What owners repeatedly praise
Engines come first. Kubota designs and builds its own diesels, and it says every M60 Series engine is made in house. Owners describe the engines as dependable.
Dealers come next. Owners say Kubota’s dealer reach is the biggest plus when something breaks. Many add that the dealer matters more than the badge, and they are right.
Resale is the third reason. Owners commonly report that entry level Kubotas sell well used, and that the newest models hold value best. No auction data was found to back a ranking, so treat that as a community view.
What owners complain about
Price is the loudest complaint. Owners disagree on whether Kubota costs more than rivals, but they agree that dealer quotes vary widely. Ask two dealers of the same brand to price the identical tractor.
Parts cost comes up next, usually as “Kubota parts are not cheap.” Owners who have run more than one brand do not agree on who charges the most. No ranking is possible.
Emissions systems draw complaints on bigger models. The most specific reports involve the diesel particulate filter (DPF) on the B3350 sold around 2016. Other owners say Kubota fixed it, and owners of newer DPF Kubotas report few problems.
Plastic body panels also come up. Only scattered posts mention them, so treat that as a minor irritation rather than a proven pattern.
The Kubota tractor lineup by series
Kubota’s current US lineup has eleven tractor series plus a tractor loader backhoe line. The table below lists each one as Kubota’s US site showed it on October 15, 2026. The hp figures are Kubota’s gross engine hp.
| Series | Models on Kubota’s site | Gross hp | Frame class | Typical buyer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BX (BX80) | BX1880, BX2380, BX2680, BX23S | 16.6 to 23.3 | Sub compact | Mowing and a few acres, light loader jobs |
| B01 | B2301, B2401, B2601 | 20.9 to 24.3 | Small compact | Acreage owner who wants more tractor than a BX |
| Standard L (L02) | L2502, L3302, L3902, L4802 | 23.3 to 48.4 | Compact | Loader work, bush hogging, small hay fields |
| Grand L70 | L3770, L3970, L4270, L4470, L5070, L6070 | 37 to 60 | Premium compact | Long hours, heavy loader lifts, cab comfort |
| LX | LX2620, LX3520, LX4020 | 23.3 to 39.8 | Compact | Buyer who wants cab or comfort options in a compact |
| MX | MX4900, MX5400, MX6000 | 50.3 to 63.4 | Economy utility | Hay, pasture and heavy implements |
| M4 | M4-071, M4D-061, M4D-071 | 65.4 to 72.1 | Utility | Small cattle and hobby farm chores in a cab |
| M60 | M5660SU, M6060, M7060 | 58.7 to 72.1 | Utility | Utility work on a budget, DPF emissions system |
| M5 | M5-091, M5-111 | 92.5 to 105.6 | Mid size ag | Working farms and heavy loader use |
| M6 | M6-101, M6-111, M6-131, M6-141 | 104.5 to 141.4 | Ag | Commercial hay, cattle and ranch work |
| Tractor loader backhoe | B26, L47, M62 | Not retrieved | TLB | Digging, trenching, light construction |
The M7 models, such as the M7-154 and M7-174, sit above the M6. Their hp and price were not readable on the pages checked, so they are left out of the table. Kubota also lists a specialty tractor category, which this guide does not cover.
Kubota publishes “as low as” MSRPs on each series page. On October 15, 2026, those advertised starting prices ran from $12,798 for a BX1880 to $109,390 for an M6-101. That is before tax, freight, loader and implements.
Prices move, so check Kubota’s tractor pages and get an out the door quote.
Two Kubota pages disagree with themselves. The B01 page shows up to 24.3 hp in its header but 23.3 in its body text. Kubota’s BX brochure lists the BX2680 at 24.8 hp, while the series page says 23.3.
The gaps are small and do not change a buying decision.
BX series: sub compact, with a new generation coming
The BX is Kubota’s sub compact line. All four models are 4WD with a hydrostatic transmission (HST), a clutchless drive you run with your foot. The BX2380 makes 21.6 hp gross and 17.7 hp at the PTO.
It is the common first tractor for 1 to 3 acres. The BX23S is the combo model sold as a tractor with a loader and a backhoe. Kubota’s manual for the other BX models says plainly that you cannot attach the backhoes to them.
On September 29, 2026, Kubota announced the BX90 series for dealers in early 2027. It names the BX2190 at 19.3 hp, the BX2390 at 21.6 and the BX2690 at 23.9. The BX2390S and BX2690S are the backhoe versions.
Kubota says the new line has side by side HST pedals and a new BT604 backhoe. The new LA355 and LA405 loaders are rated up to 721 and 904 pounds.
That matters if you are shopping now. A dealer clearing BX80 stock may deal, and a buyer who wants the two pedal layout can wait. Our comparison of the best sub compact tractors sets the current BX against Deere, Kioti, LS and the rest.
B and Standard L series: the core compact line
The B01 is a step up from the BX in frame and lift. Its gear drive DT and narrow DTN versions are the low cost way into a Kubota. The B2301 and B2601 are the HST models.
The Standard L is the heart of the lineup. Kubota calls it the core of its compact range, and the L line dates back to 1967. Four models run from 23.3 hp to 48.4 hp.
Kubota’s compact class offers HST or gear drive, a mid PTO and cab options. A mid PTO is a shaft under the belly that drives a mid mount mower.
Grand L70: the premium compact
The Grand L70 is Kubota’s flagship compact, announced October 1, 2025 and slated for dealerships in the first quarter of 2026. It runs from 37 hp to 60 hp in Deluxe and Premium trims, with ROPS or cab. Kubota lists a three range iHST with a hydro dual speed feature and common rail engines.
Its loaders are rated up to 2,427 pounds, or 2,471 pounds with the self leveling option. Kubota’s older Grand L60 page still lists the L3560 through L6060 at 37 to 62 hp. Ask the dealer which generation is on the lot.
LX series: comfort in a compact
The LX is a 4WD HST line with ROPS or a cab. It runs from 23.3 hp to 39.8 hp, and Kubota notes that Special Utility (SU) versions cost less.
The LX overlaps the Standard L in size, so the difference is mostly comfort and options. If you will spend long hours in the seat, look at the LX or the Grand L first.
MX and M series: utility and hay
The MX starts at 50.3 hp and tops out at 63.4 hp. It comes with cab or ROPS and gear or HST drive. It is Kubota’s value utility line for pasture and hay.
The M4, M60, M5 and M6 sit above it and add power, loader lift and cab comfort. The M60 uses a DPF muffler and exhaust gas recirculation, which matters for fluids and service.
Kubota groups these under Utility and Agriculture on its site. The placement of the MX with them is ours.
Which Kubota series fits your property and job?
Match the series to the acreage and the heaviest job you do. The rule below is a starting point, not a Kubota statement.
- Under about 5 acres, mostly mowing: a BX. Add a loader if you move mulch or snow.
- 5 to 15 acres with loader work, a bush hog or a box blade: a B01 or a Standard L.
- 10 to 40 acres with fencing, grading and hay for a few animals: a Standard L of 33 to 48 hp, or an LX. Add the Grand L if you want the premium cab.
- Cutting and baling your own hay, or running heavy implements: an MX or an M series.
- Digging as well as loading: a tractor loader backhoe, or a BX23S if the jobs are light.
Terrain, implement weight and loader duty move the line. The guide to what size tractor you need works through acreage and job in detail.
Two rules carry across every series. For loader work, weight and hydraulics matter more than hp. Buy the loader with the tractor, and compare lift ratings at the same measuring point.
Our front end loader guide explains pin versus 500 mm ratings and ballast.
For hay and PTO implements, match the implement’s hp requirement to the tractor’s PTO hp. Gross engine hp is the wrong number. Kubota prints both on every spec sheet.
Where are Kubota tractors made?
Kubota builds many of its small tractors in Georgia and its larger tractors in Japan. Kubota’s own fact sheet and two federal recall notices back that split. The 2018 BX recall lists Gainesville, Georgia as the maker, and the 2025 MX5400DTC recall lists Japan.
Kubota Manufacturing of America in Gainesville was founded in 1988 to make implements such as backhoes and loaders. Kubota’s fact sheet dates from about 2017. It calls Gainesville the US hub for zero turn mowers, sub compact tractors and utility vehicles.
Kubota Industrial Equipment in Jefferson, Georgia was established in 2004 to build loaders and backhoes. A 460,000 square foot plant added there began producing compact tractors in January 2013. The fact sheet says it builds 30 to 40 hp Standard L tractors.
The same sheet says Jefferson also assembles larger Kubota models that are made in Japan.
The two Georgia companies merged on January 1, 2024. Kubota Manufacturing of America is the surviving company, with about 3,500 employees. Kubota has not published a current line by line production split, so ask the dealer where a specific model was built.
Engines
Kubota makes its own engines and designs them through a US unit in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Its press kit claims the top spot worldwide for non automotive multi cylinder diesels under 100 hp. That is Kubota’s own claim, and no independent ranking was checked.
The engine origin matters for one reason. Several rival sub compacts list Yanmar engines on their spec pages, including the John Deere 1025R, the LS MT125 and the TYM T25. A Kubota runs a Kubota engine, which keeps parts and service under one roof.
What sets Kubota apart from Deere, Kioti and Mahindra?
Kubota’s edge is dealer reach, in house engines and strong resale. Its weak points are price and, on larger models, emissions equipment. Other brands win on price, on features per dollar, or on warranty length.
Dealers
Kubota’s site counts more than 1,100 authorized US dealers. Owners describe Kubota’s network as regional, with some dealers covering a wide area. Deere dealers tend to be more local.
Both vary by town. A good dealer beats a good brand with a bad dealer.
Drive and engine
HST is the clutchless drive that makes loader work easy. Every major brand in this class offers it, so it is not a Kubota exclusive. What Kubota adds is its own engine and its own transmission and hydraulic fluid.
Warranty
Kubota’s current limited warranty applies to units purchased after January 1, 2026. For BX, B, LX and L tractors in non commercial use, basic coverage is 24 months or 1,500 hours. The powertrain term is 72 months or 2,000 hours.
For commercial use, the powertrain term drops to 36 months or 2,000 hours. Read the terms on Kubota’s limited warranty page.
Two exclusions matter. The page excludes implements, loader and landscaper utility tractors, and BX Utility combos. That makes the BX23S a question for your dealer, and the page gives no separate terms for MX, M or tractor loader backhoes.
Rivals compete hard here. Their figures below come from brochures, warranty page excerpts and dealer listings, not pages we could read in full. Confirm each one in writing.
| Question | Kubota | How the others compare |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer count | More than 1,100 US dealers (Kubota’s site) | Owners call Deere dealers more local. Kioti, LS and Mahindra networks are thinner in many regions. |
| Engine | Kubota built | Several rival sub compacts use Yanmar engines. Kioti and Mahindra use their own or partner engines. |
| Residential powertrain warranty | 6 years or 2,000 hours (BX, B, LX, L) | LS 6 years (brochure). TYM 6 years or 3,000 hours on 20 to 70 hp (TYM’s page). Mahindra 5 or 7 years by model (warranty page excerpts). Kioti 2 years general plus up to 4 years engine and driveline (excerpt). Deere 72 months or 2,000 hours (Deere warranty statement DC-1360, 2017). |
| Price | Owners disagree on whether it costs more | Kioti, LS and Mahindra usually compete on price. Compare equipped quotes, not base prices. |
Kioti’s well known 6 year powertrain promotion is uncertain, so get it in writing before you count on it. The brand pages go deeper: see our guides to Kioti tractors and Mahindra tractors. The ranking of compact tractor brands puts all of them in order.
Known weak spots and recalls
Kubota has had two major tractor recalls in recent years, both confirmed on the Consumer Product Safety Commission site. There is also a handful of owner reported patterns. Neither recall involved an engine or transmission failure.
Recalls
On November 7, 2018, Kubota recalled about 121,100 mowers and compact tractors from model years 2014 to 2018. The 26 models included the BX1880, BX2380, BX2680 and BX23S, plus older BX models and ZD and ZG mowers. Hot, pressurized coolant could spray from the reservoir tank.
Kubota had three reports of burn injuries. The fix was a free replacement coolant reservoir cap. If you own a BX from those years, ask the dealer whether the cap was replaced.
On February 20, 2025, Kubota recalled about 2,600 MX5400DTC utility tractors sold from February 2020 through December 2024. The clutch cable can break, which reduces braking power. The notice lists 33 reports of broken cables and no injuries.
The remedy is a free inspection and repair. Details are in the CPSC recall notice.
Owner reported patterns
These are owner reports, not Kubota findings. Ask the dealer for any open bulletin on a specific serial number.
- DPF trouble on the B3350: owners reported regeneration problems around 2016. Many say Kubota addressed it with a repair kit.
- L2501 and L3901 bulletins: owners describe serial number dependent fixes for hydraulic oil contamination. They also mention an engine computer reflash for an intermittent code.
- L2502 cold start smoke: a few owners describe smoke on cold starts and a dealer pointing to pump timing. No bulletin was seen.
- Loader joints: some L series owners wish for replaceable bushings and better grease fitting placement.
- BX transmission strainer: owners often find gummy sealant debris in the strainer at the first service, with no metal.
Many owners report none of these. The patterns are worth a question at the dealer, not a reason to avoid the brand.
Kubota fluids and maintenance in brief
Kubota wants its own transmission and hydraulic fluid, Super UDT2, in its compact tractors. The BX manual lists 11.3 liters (3.0 gallons) in the shared transmission and hydraulic case. It also permits regular UDT.
Engine oil is where owners get caught. The BX manual lists API classes CF, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 and CI-4. It says CJ-4 oil cannot be used on that tractor, and it never mentions CK-4.
Kubota’s US lubricant table calls CJ-4 required for Interim Tier 4 and newer engines. So the right oil depends on the engine, and the manual for your exact model wins.
The first service on a BX arrives at 50 hours: engine oil, engine oil filter and transmission oil filter. The transmission fluid and strainer come first at 400 hours.
The Kubota BX maintenance guide has the full schedule, capacities, filter numbers and the 50 hour steps. The tractor hydraulic fluid guide explains UDT2 and when a generic fluid is a bad idea.
Buying a Kubota used
A used Kubota is a good buy if the service history is clean and the hours match the condition. The model year matters less than the records. Owners say the newest models resell best.
Years and series to look at
Entry level machines are the easiest to resell, based on owner reports. That points to the BX, B and Standard L lines, which also have the most used stock. On a larger DPF model, ask for the regeneration history and have a dealer check it.
Ask three things. Was the coolant cap replaced on a 2014 to 2018 BX? Was the transmission fluid changed on schedule, and is there an open bulletin on the serial number?
Hours and inspection
Hours matter less than care. A tractor with 1,500 hours and full records can beat one with 400 hours and none. That is a practical rule, not a Kubota figure.
- Start the tractor cold and watch for smoke and hard starts.
- Run the loader through its full range and check for slop in the pins.
- Check the transmission fluid for color and metal.
- Test the PTO and the 3 point hitch under load.
- Pull the service records and compare them to the manual.
- Ask a dealer to read the serial number for open campaigns.
Get an HST tractor if you plan on loader work. Owners say it makes loader cycling far easier than gear drive. A used tractor that already has a loader is often the better value, since adding one later costs more.
Kubota model numbers decoded
A Kubota model number tells you the frame class, a rough power class and the generation. It is not exact. Kubota publishes no official decoder, so this is the pattern the spec sheets show.
Take the BX2380. BX is the sub compact frame, and 23 is a rounded power class for a 21.6 hp engine. The 80 is the series, which is why Kubota calls the family the BX80.
The new BX2390 keeps the same 21.6 hp and the same 23. Only the 90 changes.
Take the L3302. L is the Standard L frame, and 33 matches the 33 hp rating on Kubota’s page. The 02 is the generation, so it follows the L3301 of the 01 series.
The power digits do not always match. The L3901 made 37.5 hp gross and about 32 hp at the PTO, so its 39 was neither number. The L3902 keeps the 37.5 figure.
Grand L70 numbers track closer. The L3770 is 37 hp, the L5070 is 50 and the L6070 is 60.
The M series uses three digit numbers that follow gross hp. The M6-141 makes 141.4 hp and the M4-071 makes 72.1. The M5-111 is a slight exception at 105.6.
Letters at the end matter too. DT and DTN are the gear drive versions, with DTN the narrow one. SU stands for Special Utility, a lower cost trim.
On the Grand L70, DLX is Deluxe and PRM is Premium. The BX23S is the loader and backhoe combo, and the S on the new BX2390S means the same thing. Confirm any suffix with the dealer, because Kubota does not list them all.
Who should skip Kubota and buy something else?
Skip Kubota if price per horsepower is your main test, or if a Kubota dealer is far away. Skip it too if you want a feature Kubota does not sell in your size. These are real reasons, not brand loyalty.
- You want the most hp or features per dollar. Kioti, LS and Mahindra often price lower for similar size. Check the equipment lists, because options differ.
- The nearest Kubota dealer is a long drive. A closer Deere, Kioti or Mahindra dealer can serve you better for a decade.
- You will use it commercially. Kubota’s powertrain coverage drops from 6 years to 3 on commercial use. Compare that with a rival’s commercial terms.
- You want the longest paper warranty. Mahindra’s 7 year powertrain tier and Yanmar’s 10 year powertrain claim both beat Kubota’s 6. Read what each one covers.
- You love a feature Kubota lacks. Some buyers want a specific cab layout or a different loader design. Others want a two pedal HST today rather than in 2027.
If none of these fit you, a Kubota is a safe choice. The honest tradeoff is simple: you pay more up front for dealer support and resale.
Bottom line
Kubota tractors are good, and the strengths are real. They are dealer reach, in house engines, a clear 6 year residential powertrain warranty and good reported resale. Price is the main tradeoff, and rivals can undercut it.
Pick the series by acreage and job, buy the loader with the tractor, and check the dealer before the brand. Skip Kubota only when price, distance or a missing feature outweighs those strengths.
Frequently asked questions
Are Kubota tractors reliable?
Owners generally describe them as dependable, and the engines get the most praise. There is no public reliability survey to prove it. The two tractor recalls found were a coolant cap and a clutch cable, each with a free fix.
What is the best Kubota tractor for a small property?
For a few acres, the BX2380 is the common pick, with HST and a loader. For 5 to 15 acres with heavier work, look at an L3302 or an LX. Match the size to your biggest implement, and consider waiting for the BX90 if two pedal HST matters.
How many dealers does Kubota have?
Kubota’s US site says more than 1,100 dealers, and its August 2026 sales announcement uses the same figure. Its press kit from about 2017 said 1,100 as well, so the network has held steady. Local coverage still varies, so use the dealer locator.
Are Kubota tractors made in the USA?
Many small ones are. Kubota’s Georgia plants build sub compact and Standard L tractors. The 2018 recall notice lists Gainesville as the maker of the BX models, while larger models such as the MX5400DTC are made in Japan.
Is Kubota better than John Deere?
Neither wins every test. Kubota has its own engines and a regional dealer model, while Deere has more local dealers in many areas. Owners say both are good, and the dealer decides the experience.
What does a Kubota warranty cover?
For new BX, B, LX and L tractors bought after January 1, 2026, residential use gets 24 months or 1,500 hours basic. The powertrain term is 72 months or 2,000 hours. Commercial powertrain coverage is 36 months, and implements and BX Utility combos are excluded.
Does the Kubota BX take CK-4 oil?
The BX manual does not list CK-4. It lists CF through CI-4 and says CJ-4 cannot be used. Ask your dealer in writing before using any oil outside the manual’s list.
