Best Subcompact Tractors: The Models Worth Buying in 2026

Most buyers assume the most powerful sub compact wins. This guide compares the 2026 and 2027 models on PTO hp, loader lift, warranty and dated prices, then picks by need.

IN THIS GUIDE JUMP TO A SECTION +

Most buyers assume the best subcompact tractor is the one with the most horsepower. It isn’t. Nearly every current sub compact makes 21 to 25 hp, and the spread at the PTO is about 3 hp.

What separates them is loader lift, mower setup, pedal feel, weight, and who fixes the tractor when it breaks. The gap between a good dealer and a bad one is wider than the gap between any two models here.

For most people on 1 to 3 acres, the Kubota BX2380 is the best subcompact tractor to start with. It is proven, widely serviced, and its starting MSRP sits below several rivals. The Deere 1M 25 (the renamed 1025R), the Kioti CS2520H and the LS MT125 each beat it in one area.

Specs and prices below were checked on October 15, 2026. Several manufacturers block their own spec pages, so every figure says where it came from. Anything we could not confirm is labeled.

The short version

  • Best overall: Kubota BX2380, 21.6 hp and 17.7 PTO hp. Starting MSRP $16,624 on Kubota’s site, checked October 15, 2026.
  • Best with a backhoe: Kubota BX23S, sold as a matched loader and backhoe package.
  • Best for mowing: John Deere 1M 25, the model year 2027 name for the 1025R. Owners prefer its drive over deck.
  • Best value: LS MT125, with the strongest loader rating here and a 6 year limited warranty in LS’s brochure.
  • Tight budget: Kubota BX1880 at $12,798 starting MSRP, if you accept 16.6 hp.
  • Always get an out the door quote in writing. Freight, setup, loader and tires move the price more than the badge does.

How to judge a sub compact tractor

Judge a sub compact on PTO hp, weight, loader lift and pedal feel. Then look at mower setup, backhoe ability, dealer support and warranty. Engine hp is the least useful number, because the whole class lands within a few hp of each other.

Engine hp versus PTO hp

PTO hp is the power that reaches your mower, tiller or snowblower. Engine hp is the gross figure printed on the hood. It is measured before the transmission, hydraulic pump and fan take their share.

The two differ by 3 to 7 hp on these tractors. A BX2380 makes 21.6 hp at the engine and 17.7 hp at the PTO, per Kubota’s spec sheet. The LS MT125 advertises 24.7 engine hp but only 17.2 PTO hp.

So the “smaller” Kubota sends more power to the implement. Shop on the PTO number.

Weight and ballast

Weight is traction and loader stability. These tractors run from about 1,336 to 1,900 pounds before a loader goes on.

A light tractor with a full bucket gets light in the rear and loses steering grip. Rear ballast or filled tires fix that, and both cost money. Our tractor size finder and ballast calculator will estimate what you need.

Loader lift, and which number to trust

Loader lift is rated two ways. One is at the pivot pins, which gives the big brochure number. The other is 500 mm (about 20 inches) ahead of the pins, closer to where a real load sits.

A Kubota quick attach BX loader lists 613 pounds at the pins and 423 pounds forward. Massey Ferguson rates its 1GC loader at 662 pounds measured 19.5 inches forward. That looks weak next to a pin rating, but it is a different test.

Compare like with like. If one dealer quotes a pin number and another quotes a forward number, you are not comparing loaders.

Transmission and the pedal

Every tractor here is hydrostatic (HST), so you drive with foot pedals and no clutch. The difference is the pedal layout.

Kubota BX models use one treadle pedal: toe for forward, heel for reverse. Deere, LS, New Holland and TYM use two separate pedals. Owners are split, so drive both before you decide.

Mower setup

Mid mount mowers hang under the tractor and run off a mid PTO at 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. Deere’s drive over deck comes off without lying on the ground. Owners who have run both say it beats the Kubota setup.

There is a catch. The 1025R sits low, and some owners found a 60 inch mid mount deck gave them clearance trouble. Match the deck width to the tractor and your ground.

Backhoe ability

A sub compact can dig, but it is a light duty digger. A backhoe on a 1,500 pound tractor handles drain lines, post holes and small trenches in normal soil.

It will not break hard clay or rock the way a compact on a 3,000 pound frame will. If digging is the main job, read the “who should skip” section first.

Dealer support and warranty

The nearest good dealer is worth more than 2 hp. Owners make this point in nearly every brand comparison thread. Their stories include weeks of waiting for parts, and warranty claims that stalled until the dealer pushed.

Warranty terms differ more than the hp numbers do. Kubota’s warranty page lists 24 months or 1,500 hours of basic coverage on BX tractors. It adds a 72 month or 2,000 hour limited powertrain warranty for residential use.

LS’s brochure says 6 year limited. A copy of LS’s policy splits that into 2 years general and 6 years powertrain. Kioti’s warranty page lists 24 months general coverage plus up to 4 years on the engine and driveline.

Kioti’s well known 6 year powertrain promotion is a moving target. Its program page lists a window that closed in 2024, yet the warranty page still mentions it, so get any 6 year promise in writing. Read what each warranty covers, not just the headline years.

The sub compact tractors worth considering in 2026

The models a buyer can realistically find today are listed below, best documented first. Read the source notes under the table. Several figures come from a dealer sheet or a brochure rather than a current manufacturer page.

Source notes, all checked October 15, 2026. Kubota figures come from its BX80 brochure, its BX2380 spec sheet and its limited warranty page. The brochure dates from 2017, so loader model names may have changed.

Deere figures come from Deere Canada’s 1E 23 and 1M 25 spec pages, which load where the US pages do not. The 1M 25 loader figures come from the 120R tables for the 1025R. The two share a frame.

Kioti and LS figures come from their product pages. The CS2520 loader rating comes from dealer spec sheets. Massey Ferguson hp, PTO and loader figures come from its 1GC series page.

The MF weights come from dealer or aggregator sheets, so treat them as approximate. The TYM weight is from the T25 operator’s manual, and the MT225S weight matches LS’s brochure.

Kubota BX1880, BX2380, BX2680 and BX23S

Kubota’s BX line is the reference point for the whole class. All four share a 6.6 gallon tank and a live independent PTO. The rear shaft turns 540 rpm and the mid shaft 2,500 rpm.

The BX2380 and BX23S use the same 3 cylinder D902 diesel at 21.6 hp. The BX23S is the version sold as a loader and backhoe package, with a BT603 backhoe per the brochure.

Kubota’s BX page lists starting MSRPs of $12,798 for the BX1880, $16,624 for the BX2380 and $17,632 for the BX2680. We checked them October 15, 2026. See Kubota’s BX series page for current numbers.

One wrinkle: that page lists the BX2680 at 23.3 hp, while the brochure says 24.8. Ask the dealer which rating applies to the unit on the lot.

The 3 point hitch lifts 680 pounds at 24 inches behind the lift points on the BX2380. That is modest for a box blade or a heavy rear blade. Read our box blade buying guide before you choose a size.

John Deere 1E 23 and 1M 25, formerly 1023E and 1025R

Deere renamed its sub compacts for model year 2027. Deere’s February 2026 release announced the 1E 23, 1M 25 and 1R 25. All three now have their own pages on deere.com, alongside the outgoing 1025R page.

Trade press and dealers map the names this way: 1023E to 1E 23, 1025R to 1M 25, and 2025R to 1R 25. Deere’s release describes a new naming system but does not print that mapping, so treat it as reported. One early report called the entry model “1E 25”, which does not match Deere’s own page.

Deere Canada’s spec pages give the hard numbers. The 1M 25 makes 23.9 hp gross and 18.2 PTO hp. It weighs 1,556 pounds open station and lifts 758 pounds at 24 inches on the hitch.

The 1E 23 makes 21.5 hp and 16.2 PTO hp. It weighs 1,446 pounds and has the same 758 pound hitch rating.

The 1R 25 is a step up with the same engine. It weighs 1,872 pounds, has a 63 inch wheelbase and lifts 915 pounds on the hitch. The 1M 25 and 1R 25 can be ordered with a factory HVAC cab, per Deere’s release.

See Deere’s 1M 25 page for the current configuration. If you are shopping a leftover 1025R against a new 1M 25, treat them as close relatives. We found no official pricing or warranty statement for any of the three on Deere’s site.

Kioti CS2520H

Kioti lists the CS2520 at 24.5 hp, 18.5 PTO hp and 1,554 pounds. It has a 7 gpm pump and a 700 pound hitch rating. The CS2520H is the HST version.

Our October 15, 2026 search showed a $17,799 starting MSRP for the CS2520H on Kioti’s CS2520 page. The page itself would not load for us, so confirm it.

The matched loader is the SL2420. Dealer spec sheets rate it at about 1,062 pounds at the pins with a 73.7 inch lift height. The 992 pound figure in some listings appears to belong to a different loader, and the KL2510 is built for the larger CX2510.

Ask which loader is on the tractor you are pricing, and where it was rated.

LS MT125 and MT225S

LS sells two sub compacts at 24.7 hp. The MT125 has 17.2 PTO hp and weighs 1,444 pounds without ballast. LS’s page lists a 1,008 pound loader and a 992 pound hitch (728 pounds at 24 inches).

The MT225S has 19.3 PTO hp, a 3 range HST and an electric PTO. Its loader is rated at 1,067 pounds per the brochure. Both loaders beat most of the field on paper.

LS publishes no MSRP, so prices come from dealers. The brochure’s “6 year limited warranty” is 2 years general plus a 6 year powertrain term, according to a copy of LS’s policy. Confirm the current terms in writing.

New Holland Workmaster 25S, Massey Ferguson 1GC series, TYM T25

The Workmaster 25S lists 24.7 hp and 17.2 PTO hp. It has a dual pedal 2 range HST and standard 4WD. Coverage is 2 years bumper to bumper plus 4 years powertrain, and New Holland’s page lists no weight or loader lift.

Massey Ferguson has also renamed its line. Its US page now shows the 1GC.23 (22.5 hp, 18.3 PTO hp) and 1GC.25 (24.5 hp, 18.5 PTO hp) as current. The 1GC.23B and 1GC.25B backhoe versions dig 76 inches.

The GC1723E and GC1725M are listed as previous model years, and the hp figures carry over. Both 1GC models lift 661 pounds at 24 inches on the hitch. The loader lifts 662 pounds at 19.5 inches forward.

The TYM T25 makes 24.7 hp and 18.3 PTO hp. TYM’s page rates the hitch at 1,534 pounds at the link ends and 1,102 pounds at 24 inches. That is the strongest hitch figure here, and it is a manufacturer claim.

Mahindra eMax

Mahindra’s eMax line is the one we trust least on paper, because Mahindra’s US pages block automated readers. Its 2024 brochure lists the eMax 20S HST (19.4 hp), the 22L and the 25L (up to 24 hp). The eMax 25S is not in it.

Spec databases date the 25S to 2017 through 2019, so treat it as discontinued. The 22L and 25L may be gone too. Databases list their production as ending in 2023, and the only eMax configurator on Mahindra’s site is for the 20S HST.

If a dealer offers an eMax 25, ask the model year. Mahindra USA lists the eMax in its 7 year limited powertrain tier, capped at 3,000 hours. Confirm the terms for the exact unit on the lot.

Best subcompact tractor by need

Best overall: Kubota BX2380

The BX2380 is the best overall pick because it balances price, dealer reach and a design refined over two decades. It makes 21.6 hp and 17.7 PTO hp, within a hp of several 25 hp rivals at the shaft. It starts at $16,624 MSRP on Kubota’s site as of October 15, 2026.

It is not the strongest on any single measure. Choose it when you want the safest all around buy and a dealer in every county. For about 2 hp more at the PTO, step to the BX2680.

Best subcompact tractor with a loader and backhoe: Kubota BX23S

The BX23S is the cleanest way to buy a loader and backhoe together. Kubota sells it as one matched package. You skip the hunt for a backhoe subframe, and the hydraulics are already plumbed.

Expect to pay far more than the tractor only price. Dealer listings for 2025 LS MT125 loader and backhoe packages ran from about $30,400 to $35,450. A BX23S lands in the same neighborhood, and the MT125 and Massey Ferguson 1GC.23B are the main alternatives.

Kubota’s warranty table excludes BX utility combos from the standard BX row. Ask the dealer for the written coverage on the BX23S specifically.

Best for mowing: John Deere 1M 25 (the renamed 1025R)

The 1M 25 has the easier deck setup for people who mow a lot. Owners comparing the two say the drive over deck mounts and removes more simply than Kubota’s. It also sends 18.2 hp to the PTO, more than the BX2380.

Mind the clearance warning. Some 1025R owners found a 60 inch deck a tight fit on rough ground. Buy the deck size Deere pairs with the tractor, and try it on your lawn first.

Best value: LS MT125

The MT125 gives you 24.7 hp, a 1,008 pound loader rating and 6 years of powertrain coverage. One owner’s dealer quote of $15,900 for a base tractor with loader is the lowest figure we found. The date on it is unclear, so use it only as a floor.

The tradeoff is dealer density. LS has fewer stores than Kubota or Deere. One new owner needed the dealer twice in his first 13 hours, so pick the MT125 only if a good LS dealer is within an easy drive.

Best on a tight budget: Kubota BX1880

The BX1880 is the lowest priced option from a major maker at $12,798 starting MSRP. It makes 16.6 hp and 13.7 PTO hp. That suits a small lawn, a 54 inch deck and light loader work.

Do not buy it hoping to run a 60 inch mower or move heavy loads. In that case the BX2380 is the better first buy. The gap is only about $3,800 at starting MSRP.

Best 25 hp tractor and best tractor under 20,000 dollars

For a true 25 hp class machine, look at the BX2680, CS2520H, MT125, MT225S, 1GC.25, Workmaster 25S and T25. The MT225S has the highest PTO hp in the group at 19.3. It also has the strongest loader rating after the MT125.

For a tractor under 20,000 dollars, start with published MSRPs. Kubota and Kioti list $12,798 to $17,799 for the BX1880, BX2380, BX2680 and CS2520H. Those prices are for the bare tractor.

A loader, freight, setup and tires can push the total past $20,000 on any of them. Ask for the out the door price before you decide.

What a sub compact really costs

Starting prices run from $12,798 to about $18,000 for the bare tractor. A loader adds several thousand more. The right number only comes from your own quote, and we checked these prices on October 15, 2026.

  • Kubota’s site lists starting MSRPs of $12,798 (BX1880), $16,624 (BX2380) and $17,632 (BX2680).
  • Kioti’s CS2520 page showed a $17,799 starting MSRP for the CS2520H in search results.
  • One Deere dealer listed a 2026 1023E at $15,129 and a 2026 1025R at $18,013. Those are dealer asking prices, not MSRP. The same dealer shows the new 1E 23 and 1M 25 as “call for price”.
  • Dealer listings for the 2026 LS MT225S showed $19,700 and $24,200. The spread suggests different loader and tire packages.

Treat all of these as starting points. Dealers add freight and setup, and the loader, mower deck and tires are often extras. Get the out the door price in writing from two dealers before you commit.

What owners praise and complain about

These are patterns that repeat across owner discussions, not single stories. Where we found only one or two reports, we say so.

Kubota BX2380

Owners praise its refinement, its resale value and the dealer reach. Compared with the Deere, several call it the nicer tractor to sit on and the cheaper one to buy.

Complaints repeat too. Owners say it is not overly powerful. Some report a treadle pedal that does not return to neutral cleanly, and engine noise ringing through the hollow ROPS tubing comes up more than once.

Quality control complaints appear on newer units, so inspect the tractor at delivery. For fluids and service intervals, see our Kubota BX maintenance guide.

Deere 1025R (and by extension the 1M 25)

Praise centers on the loader, the position control hitch and the mower deck. Complaints center on low ground clearance.

Some owners report driveshaft universal joints failing around 400 hours. A common fix is greaseable replacement joints, greased about every 50 hours. Others had a wiring fault that cut the PTO and was fixed under warranty.

A few describe lemons, and the consistent advice is that dealer quality matters as much as the tractor. The 1M 25 is too new for owner patterns. Assume the frame and driveline carry over until owners prove otherwise.

Kioti CS2520H

We found very little CS2520 specific owner feedback. The few mentions are from new owners asking about wheel spacers and attachments, with no defects reported.

Owners of other Kioti models repeat the same themes. The build is solid, but dealer support, parts availability and resale vary by region. Ask your dealer about service turnaround before you buy.

LS MT125 and MT225S

Owners of both are generally upbeat. MT225S threads describe it as a lot of tractor for the money, and one MT125 owner logged 220 hours in two years with no problems.

Specific complaints are small: the fuel filler position, the loader joystick, the 3 point to backhoe switch and a pedal pin. One owner reported wiring disturbed during a backhoe seat change and a broken hydrostatic adjustment rod. That is a single report, not a pattern.

TYM T25

T25 owner threads from 2025 and 2026 are mostly positive, with reports of 75 and 150 trouble free hours. One recurring gripe is a loader valve with no proportional feel. Owners find it fine with a bucket and frustrating with forks.

Another notes ground clearance under 8 inches, about the same as the Deere. A thread titled for a possible lemon exists, but it turned into a debate about dealer responsiveness rather than a list of defects.

Mahindra, New Holland and Massey Ferguson

Recent owner feedback on these three is thin. The Mahindra eMax threads are mostly from 2014 and 2015. They praise value and warranty while noting thinner accessory support and uneven dealers.

We found no repeated failure patterns for the Workmaster 25S or the GC and 1GC series. For all three, the best test is a local dealer visit and a talk with an owner near you.

Who should skip a sub compact and step up to a compact

Skip a sub compact if your jobs are heavy, your ground is hard, or your land is large. These machines weigh under 2,000 pounds and lift under 1,100 pounds at the loader pins. At the bucket edge they lift far less.

Step up in these cases:

  • You mow more than about 3 acres with a 60 inch deck, or you bush hog regularly. See our rotary cutter buying guide.
  • You move round bales, wet gravel or full pallets. Our guide to how much a hay bale weighs shows why a sub compact struggles.
  • You want to dig hard clay or rock, or rework a rough driveway with a Harley rake.
  • You want a loader that stays planted with a heavy bucket and ballast on board.

The regret stories follow a pattern. Owners who bought a 1025R or BX for mowing, then added a loader and a bush hog, often traded up within two years. Our guide to sizing a tractor by acreage and job walks through the decision.

Used sub compacts: which hold up and what to watch

Older Kubota BX tractors such as the BX2200 come up most in used discussions. They hold value because they keep running. The checks below come from those threads and apply to any used sub compact.

  1. Start the engine cold and watch for smoke, hard starting or a rough idle.
  2. Test the hydrostatic drive under load on a slope. Owners of older BX2200s describe a hydro that struggles pulling a loaded trailer uphill. That can signal a tired pump.
  3. Look under the tractor for the plastic cooling fan between the engine and transmission. Sticks break it when the mower deck is off, so a missing skid plate is a warning sign.
  4. Look for leaks at the front axle pivot and check the steering lines for weeping fittings.
  5. Grease the pedal zerk under the floor mat and see whether the pedal moves freely.
  6. Inspect the loader, bucket cylinders and pins for slop or weld repairs.
  7. Ask for service records, and compare the hour meter to the age. Typical home use is around 80 hours a year. A 10 year old tractor with 800 hours is normal.

On a used Deere 1025R, ask whether the driveshaft joints were replaced. Also check the PTO for cutouts and the dash for fault codes. Once you own it, use our tractor hydraulic fluid guide to pick the right fluid for the first service.

Bottom line

The best subcompact tractor for most people is the Kubota BX2380. It sends solid power to the PTO at a lower starting price than most rivals. There is a dealer near almost everyone.

Pick the Deere 1M 25 for mowing and the LS MT125 for loader value. Pick the BX23S for a backhoe and the BX1880 when money is tight. Then match the tractor to your jobs and your nearest good dealer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most reliable sub compact tractor?

Kubota and Deere are the names owners recommend most often, and both have the widest dealer networks. Reliability still comes down to the individual unit and the dealer behind it. Maintain it on schedule and ask how the dealer handles warranty claims.

How many acres can a sub compact handle?

Owners generally describe 1 to 3 acres as the sweet spot. Beyond that, mowing time and implement weight start to favor a compact. Use our free size finder to check your own numbers.

Is a sub compact strong enough for a front loader and snow?

Yes for light loader work and driveway snow. Add rear ballast and chains or R4 tires. Expect to lift 400 to 1,000 pounds depending on the model and how far out the load sits.

Can a sub compact run a 60 inch mower?

Most can, but it is the tightest fit in the class. Some 1025R owners found a 60 inch deck a clearance problem on uneven ground. Check the maker’s own mower pairing for your model and try the deck first.

Does a sub compact need diesel?

Every model in this guide runs a 3 cylinder diesel. That suits loader and PTO work, where steady torque at low rpm matters more than peak hp.

Which sub compact has the longest warranty?

On paper, Mahindra’s 7 year powertrain term on the eMax is the longest, with a 3,000 hour cap. Kubota’s 72 month term and LS’s 6 year term come next. TYM’s own warranty page lists 6 years (72 months or 3,000 hours) as well.

Basic bumper to bumper coverage is 2 years almost everywhere. Read what each powertrain warranty actually covers. The full coverage period matters more than the headline number.
