IN THIS GUIDE JUMP TO A SECTION +

Kubota BX maintenance starts with the first 50 hour service, followed by the intervals for your exact tractor. The 2022 BX1880, BX2380 and BX2680 manual calls for engine oil every 200 hours or yearly, whichever comes first. It separately schedules the engine and HST filters every 200 hours after their first change.

The first service includes engine oil, the engine oil filter and the HST oil filter. Use the hour meter and the calendar together. A low hour tractor can still reach its annual oil service.

The tractor schedule below follows the 2022 manufacturer manual, identified on its cover as K2C51-7131-5. Loader, backhoe and mower attachments have separate manuals. Match each document to the model and serial number before ordering parts or using a torque figure.

The short version

  • First 50 hours: engine oil, engine oil filter and HST filter. Afterward, engine oil has a 200 hour or yearly limit.
  • The BX2380 oil capacity is 3.3 liters, about 3.5 US quarts, with the filter. Confirm the oil approval for your engine and manual edition.
  • Transmission and hydraulics: 11.3 liters (3.0 gallons) of Kubota Super UDT2. Change it every 400 hours and clean the strainer at the same time.
  • Front axle: 3.6 liters (3.8 quarts) every 400 hours. Coolant: 50/50 long life mix every 2,000 hours or 2 years.
  • Keep separate tractor, loader and mower service records. Grease intervals and mounting torque belong to the manual for that component.

Which Kubota BX models this guide covers

The schedule applies to BX1880, BX2380 and BX2680 tractors covered by the 2022 manual. The earlier online document linked in many guides is an Australian edition. It should not be treated as the universal service authority for a US tractor.

We checked the full Kubota BX operator manual, 2022 edition, distributed by a US retailer. Confirm its applicability with your dealer using the tractor serial number. Older BX generations and the BX23S need their own documents.

A BX23S shares some specifications with other BX tractors, but its loader and backhoe add separate service requirements. Do not transfer LA340 or BT603 mounting torque to a BX2380 attachment. Mower deck model numbers matter just as much.

Kubota BX maintenance schedule: every interval in one table

The table summarizes the 2022 tractor schedule, printed pages 74 and 75. It separates the initial service from later hour and calendar limits. Check the detailed procedure and footnotes before doing the work.

Interval Job Notes
Daily Check engine oil, transmission fluid and coolant levels. Clean the panel and radiator screen. Open the air cleaner evacuator valve weekly, or daily in dust
After the first 50 hours Change engine oil, replace the engine oil filter, replace the transmission oil filter Required. Then every 200 hours (200, 400, 600 and so on)
Every 50 hours Grease the tractor. Test the engine start system and the OPC (operator presence) system. Check wheel bolt torque and clean the lock lever shaft Grease more often in wet, muddy work
Every 100 hours Check the battery and fuel filter. Clean the air cleaner element. Adjust the fan belt, brake pedal and HST neutral spring HST neutral spring is a dealer job
Every 200 hours Replace engine oil and HST filters; check toe in Engine oil also has a yearly limit, whichever comes first
Every 400 hours Change transmission fluid and clean the strainer. Change front axle oil and adjust the front axle pivot. Replace the fuel filter element Fuel filter replacement is listed as a dealer job
Every 800 hours Adjust engine valve clearance Dealer job
Every 1,000 hours or 1 year Replace the air cleaner element Whichever comes first
Every 1,500 hours Check injector pressure Dealer job
Every 2,000 hours or 2 years Flush the cooling system and change the coolant Whichever comes first
Hose inspection and replacement Check the listed hoses and lines yearly The 2022 chart lists 2 year replacement for radiator, power steering and breather hoses; 4 years for fuel and intake lines. Follow each row separately

What the first 50 hour marks actually mean

The chart marks engine oil, the engine oil filter and the HST filter for the first 50 hour service. Later engine oil changes also have the yearly limit. Do not treat the initial service as permission to extend that calendar limit.

The same three rows carry a footnote that says the initial 50 hours should not be a replacement cycle. Read that with the chart, not against it.

The next circles sit at 200, 400 and 600 hours. The 50 hour change does not reset your count to 250.

Record the manual revision beside your service log. That makes later interval changes easier to resolve without combining schedules from different tractors.

Kubota BX2380 oil capacity and engine oil spec

The Kubota BX2380 engine holds 3.3 liters (3.5 quarts) of oil with the filter. That is measured at the upper mark on the dipstick. The other models differ a little.

Model Engine oil with filter Coolant with recovery tank
BX1880 3.0 L (3.2 quarts) 2.9 L (3.1 quarts)
BX2380 3.3 L (3.5 quarts) 3.1 L (3.3 quarts)
BX2680 4.0 L (4.2 quarts) 3.3 L (3.5 quarts)

These are nominal refill capacities for the three listed tractors. Fill gradually and use the specified level check. The BX23S is omitted here because it needs its own applicable manual.

Check the level before you start the engine, or at least 5 minutes after you shut it off. Oil drains back slowly, and a quick check right after shutdown reads low.

Grade and API class

Choose both the viscosity and the performance category from the documentation for your engine. The 2022 manual lists CF through CI-4 and excludes CJ-4. Kubota USA’s general lubricant table, however, permits CJ-4 for non EGR engines and says its CJ-4 guidance supersedes earlier publications.

Those sources do not provide a clear model and serial specific resolution for every BX owner. Ask Kubota or an authorized dealer to confirm the approved oil in writing. Do not assume that any dealer jug or a general backward compatibility statement settles that conflict.

The manual temperature chart includes 10W-30 and 15W-40, with 10W-30 listed below 14 F. Follow the chart and any applicable manufacturer update together. Our diesel engine oil guide explains the category distinction.

Kubota BX2380 hydraulic fluid: Super UDT2, capacity and the 50 versus 400 hour question

The BX2380 transmission and hydraulics share one case that holds 11.3 liters (3.0 gallons) of Kubota Super UDT2. Kubota says regular UDT is also permitted, but it recommends Super UDT2. That one case feeds the HST, the loader, the mower lift and any rear hydraulic work.

Our tractor hydraulic fluid guide explains UTF fluids and brand names in more depth.

In the checked 2022 tractor schedule, replace the HST filter at the first 50 hours and every 200 hours thereafter. Change the transmission fluid and clean the strainer every 400 hours. A different edition must be checked on its own terms.

A filter service and a full fluid change are different jobs. Write each one separately in the service log. This avoids changing fluid unnecessarily or missing a filter service.

Some owners quote older manual copies or workshop manuals that list a full fluid change at 50 hours. We could not confirm those editions. If your own manual says 50 for the fluid, follow your manual.

For an early service, follow the applicable manual rather than adding a strainer procedure from owner reports.

  • At minimum, change the transmission filter at 50 hours and top the fluid back up. That is the manual’s requirement.

If drained fluid contains metal, or the tractor has abnormal hydraulic noise or operation, stop using it and contact the dealer. Keep the fluid sample and the filter for inspection.

After any fluid change, fill to the upper notch on the dipstick. Run the engine at medium speed for a few minutes before you drive, then recheck the level. Kubota says not to operate the tractor right away.

Kubota BX2380 oil filter, fuel filter and other filter part numbers

The 2022 manual shows an engine oil filter, an HST oil filter, an air cleaner element and two fuel filters. Its fuel filter inspection procedure appears on printed page 90. It does not provide a shopping list of current replacement part numbers.

Use the tractor serial number and the current manufacturer parts catalog to identify each filter. Have the dealer confirm any superseded number. A retail kit description is not proof of the correct parts for every BX.

Filter Part identification Kubota interval
Engine oil filter Confirm current part number by serial number First 50 hours, then every 200 hours
HST oil filter Confirm current part number by serial number First 50 hours, then every 200 hours
Fuel filter elements Confirm current part number by serial number Check the applicable maintenance chart
Air cleaner element Confirm current part number by serial number Check the applicable maintenance chart

There are two fuel filters in the checked 2022 tractor manual. Check both during the scheduled inspection. Do not omit one because an earlier manual illustration or kit description differs.

The transmission strainer is a cleaning item in the 400 hour service. Inspect its seals and follow the manual procedure when reinstalling it. Confirm any replacement part against the serial number.

Front axle oil, coolant and the screens you should clean

The front axle case on a 4WD BX holds 3.6 liters (3.8 quarts). It takes Kubota Super UDT2 or SAE 80 to 90 gear oil, changed every 400 hours. Owners split between the two, and both match the manual.

Remove the left and right drain plugs and the oil gauge, drain, and refit the plugs. Take out the breather plugs before you fill, then recheck the level about 10 minutes later.

For coolant, use the specified coolant chemistry and concentration. Check the recovery tank cold and investigate repeated loss. Do not assume a falling level is evaporation or dilute the mixture without checking it.

If the system leaks, add the same maker and type of coolant at the same mix. Never mix brands.

Do not use a radiator cleaning agent in a system that holds long life coolant. Kubota warns it can build sludge.

Check the recovery tank between the L and H marks when the engine is cold.

Radiator screen and panel

Kubota’s daily check includes cleaning the panel and the radiator screen. The panel keeps debris out of the radiator and the air cleaner intake. Seat it fully when you put it back, because a clogged screen leads to overheating.

The manual does not mention a separate HST cooler screen. Owners who remove the Under Armor often find grass and chaff packed around the cooling area. Clean it whenever the panels are off.

The transmission strainer is separate from the radiator screen. Its scheduled cleaning belongs to the transmission fluid service. Do not add an early removal procedure from an owner anecdote.

Grease points on the tractor, loader and mid mount mower

The tractor grease schedule is every 50 hours, with more frequent attention in wet or muddy conditions. Follow the illustrated points in the applicable tractor manual. Wipe each fitting before connecting the gun.

The loader and mower need their own lubrication schedules and grease specifications. A BX23S loader procedure is not proof of the requirements for an LA344 or LA344S. Record the loader and deck models before buying grease.

Use the specified grease type at each component. Do not choose by color or assume that every NLGI 2 product has the required additives. Avoid forcing grease into a blocked fitting or a sealed component.

How to do the 50 hour service yourself, step by step

Allow enough time to identify each drain, filter and level check before starting. Access and attachment removal affect the job. A service checklist is more useful than promising a fixed completion time.

The first service covers engine oil, the engine oil filter and the HST filter. Add the scheduled tractor inspections and lubrication. Do not add a strainer removal or attachment procedure unless your applicable manual calls for it.

  1. Park on firm, level ground, set the parking brake, lower any implement and stop the engine. Let it cool, because oil can be hot enough to burn.
  2. Grease the tractor points with the specified product. Use separate loader and mower instructions. Do not treat electrical terminals as grease fittings.
  3. Run the engine start safety tests exactly as described in your manual. Keep everyone clear. If the result differs, stop and have the fault repaired before operating.
  4. Follow the manual operator presence system test from the seat. Do not bypass the switch or improvise a test. Have any failed system repaired before use.
  5. Check the wheel bolts. Front bolts should be 110 to 132 ft lb and rear bolts 80 to 96 ft lb.
  6. Clean the lock lever area and the radiator screen, and check the loader mounting hardware.
  7. Drain the engine oil into a pan through the drain plug at the bottom of the engine. Refit the plug.
  8. Remove the engine oil filter. Put a film of clean oil on the new filter’s seal. Tighten it by hand until it touches, then 1/2 turn more.
  9. Refill to the upper dipstick mark. Run the engine briefly, then recheck the level and look for leaks at the filter.
  10. Replace the transmission filter the same way. The fluid level drops a little, so check the transmission dipstick afterward and top up with Super UDT2.
  11. Complete the checks specified for the tractor and attachments. Refit guards, record hours and date, and check for leaks before returning to work.

Mid mount mower deck maintenance basics

Identify the deck before servicing it. The RCK54, RCK60 and drive over variants do not share every procedure simply because they fit a BX tractor. Use the deck model and serial number to obtain its manual.

Before inspecting blades or working underneath, shut down, remove the key and disconnect the driveline as the manual directs. Support a removed deck with the specified equipment. Never rely on the tractor lift to hold it above you.

Use the exact deck manual for blade bolt torque, blade orientation, gearbox oil and lubrication intervals. A matching deck family name does not establish revision applicability. Confirm model and serial range before servicing.

A useful deck service record lists the model, manual revision, grease points, oil service and blade hardware specifications. Keep it alongside the tractor record. Our rotary cutter buying guide covers the separate questions involved in choosing a rear mower.

Common Kubota BX maintenance mistakes

The costly BX mistakes are small ones: wrong fluid, wrong level, skipped screens and loose bolts. These come up again and again.

  • Skipping the 50 hour filters. The engine oil filter and transmission filter at 50 hours are required, not a suggestion. Break in grit goes somewhere, and the filter is the cheap place for it to end up.
  • Overfilling. Fill to the upper notch, not past it. Check engine oil before starting, or at least 5 minutes after stopping.
  • Unresolved oil guidance. Check the applicable manual and manufacturer updates together. Get the BX oil approval confirmed rather than guessing from an API label.
  • Driving right after a transmission fluid change. Kubota says to run the engine at medium speed for a few minutes first.
  • Skipping the radiator screen. A clogged screen leads to overheating, and the daily check exists for a reason.
  • Loose loader hardware. Use the exact loader manual for inspection intervals and torque. Do not transfer LA340 mounting figures to an LA344 or another attachment.
  • Ignoring wheel bolts and tire pressure. One owner found loose lug nuts at the first service. Another found tires far out of pressure.
  • Using non genuine filters. Kubota says to use only genuine filters on the engine and transmission circuits. Match the part number to your serial number.

Call the dealer if the tractor creeps on level ground with your foot off the pedal. The HST neutral spring is a dealer adjustment. Call too if you find metal in the strainer or the tractor fails a safety test.

If the tractor will not start after service, our diesel tractor diagnosis guide walks through the usual causes in order.

DIY versus dealer: rough cost of a Kubota BX service

Kubota BX maintenance done at home costs the fluid and filters. A dealer adds labor and shop fees on top, and the dealer may also haul the tractor both ways.

The 50 hour service is cheap to do yourself. You need about 3.5 quarts of engine oil, two filters and a quart or so of Super UDT2 for top up.

The 400 hour service is the expensive one. It adds 3 gallons of Super UDT2 plus the front axle oil.

Ask for a quote using your tractor serial number and the service due. Itemize fluid quantities, both filters being changed, labor, disposal and transport. A forum total from another year or service scope is not a current price.

A nominal capacity is a purchasing guide, not an instruction to pour in the entire amount. Keep some correct fluid available for level adjustment. Follow the dipstick procedure after the system has been run as directed.

We could not verify a dealer’s labor rate. Ask for a written quote that itemizes parts, labor and any pickup fee.

The manual marks certain jobs for a dealer, including fuel filter replacement and HST neutral adjustment. Your tools, access and experience also matter. Leave any procedure you cannot complete as specified to a qualified technician.

Bottom line

Good Kubota BX maintenance follows the correct tractor and attachment documents. For the checked 2022 tractor edition, engine oil has both a 200 hour and yearly limit. Keep separate records for filters, transmission fluid and attachments.

Verify filter part numbers by serial number and resolve conflicting oil guidance with Kubota. Do not borrow torque or service instructions from a different loader or mower.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change the oil on a Kubota BX2380?

The checked 2022 manual specifies the first engine oil change at 50 hours, then every 200 hours or yearly, whichever comes first. It schedules the engine oil filter separately. Confirm that edition applies to your tractor.

What is the BX1880 oil capacity?

The BX1880 takes 3.0 liters (3.2 quarts) with the filter. Fill to the upper dipstick mark, run the engine briefly and recheck the level.

Do I have to change BX hydraulic fluid at 50 hours?

The checked 2022 BX1880, BX2380 and BX2680 chart lists the HST filter at 50 hours and transmission fluid at 400 hours. Confirm your own edition before servicing. Do not transfer this answer to every BX generation or BX23S.

Can I use regular tractor hydraulic fluid instead of Super UDT2?

The checked manual permits regular Kubota UDT and recommends Super UDT2. A generic compatibility claim does not establish approval for your tractor. Confirm the exact fluid specification and manufacturer requirements before substituting.

Can I use CK-4 diesel oil in a Kubota BX?

The checked BX manual and Kubota USA general guidance conflict over CJ-4, while the manual does not name CK-4. Obtain model and engine specific clarification from Kubota or an authorized dealer. This guide does not establish a universal approval or ban for all BX tractors.

What coolant does a Kubota BX use?

Kubota calls for a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol long life coolant and clean soft water. Replace it every 2,000 hours or 2 years. Never mix coolant brands.

Which Kubota BX jobs should a dealer handle?

Kubota marks five dealer services: fuel filter replacement, valve clearance, injector pressure, the injection pump and the HST neutral spring. Owners commonly do the oil, filters, grease, coolant and fluids themselves.
